De-QI
De Qi, which translates as ‘Obtaining the Qi’ is a concept which comes from the ancient classics
of acupuncture theory. Understood to be an essential aspect of acupuncture, it is a
phenomenon described vividly through rich metaphor by the ancient scholars. This course
investigates De Qi through the lens of the classics as well as through the modern scientific
literature. It will teach students how to identify the objective and subjective manifestations of De
Qi during acupuncture, and why this is so relevant to acupuncture’s efficacy. Scientific research
is overviewed to show why De Qi gets to the heart of acupuncture’s complex, system-wide
mechanisms of action. For example, the relationship between De Qi and the nervous,
endocrine, immune, and inflammatory systems modulation will be covered. This course is
helpful for improving one’s theoretical, practical, and scientific understanding of De Qi and
acupuncture, and it provides important insights and ideas for how to reliably elicit various types
of De Qi in the clinic.
